Research Measure
the Bayley
One of the research measures we take on your child is the Bayley Scale of Infant Development , or the Bayley, as we fondly refer to it. The Bayley is a widely used measure that assesses both mental and motor development. To do the Bayley assessment, the examiner evaluates the child’s ability to perform tasks, and that ability is then compared to standard “milestones”. These standards are based on when most children of a particular age have the ability to perform the task.

However, all children develop at different rates, and although a child may be slow to develop a certain skill, this does not mean that the child may never develop that skill. Some children need additional support and resources to help them mature.
By administering the Bayley to the children, we can help identify which children may need further assistance. If we find that your child has a developmental delay based on the Bayley assessment, we will help you find appropriate services.
Research evidence exists to indicate that many children with early developmental delays experience “catch-up growth” if they receive further support. The children are able to learn the skills they previously had trouble learning.
Caregivers can be very helpful in supporting young children’s efforts to mature. If you have additional questions about the Bayley, please feel free to ask one of our staff members.
